@MyInnerSim & @Corwim - ok I have some ideas of how to make some funds in your store, other than creating baked goods and art work. Why not put some other items in the store that sims could buy as well?
So, for instance, in the bakery, you could sell Polly wants a plate tree ($2,100) to purchase, or the Royal Crabtree Tea Set (770), or even the sea captains clock (810) - you know, time your baking. Once you get a bit of $$, you can even have a mannequin with an apron outfit. I am sure you can come up with some other ideas. If you're low on funds, you can start with the dessert of dessert display ($100) or the blue plate at the same amount or the in-balance scale ($200).
For the art store, you could sell some art that is already done (like pictures that you don't have to paint), and things like Old Fashioned Camera ($645) or even those disaster plaques ($500), or Geometric Perfection ($1,140). So they would still be theme related to your retail store, but they would be add-on accessories. Also, the art store could also have things that are "art related" like the split beam-split personality bench ($200) - it looks like something that would have been hand painted.
Anyway, good luck. I had the same problem in the retail store, as the max an outfit goes for is $350 (and that is with 100% mark-up). So, I had to think what could I do to get some more simoleons. So, then I thought mirrors and dressers. And then left-over from the wedding theme was the wine bottle holder, which doesn't take up much room, but for some reason, sims like to buy that item. It is sort of fashion related lol Try on an outfit, admire yourself and have a glass of wine.
Another thought for MyInnerSim - only have 1 kitchen. I know you want to do a little apt upstairs, but you can save $$ on the kitchen, since you already have one downstairs. Ditto for the bathroom. Just have a shower upstairs. Saves some simoleons.
Good luck and don't give up hope. Just try to put some other higher priced items in the store as well, and hopefully that will help.
