I couldn't agree more, and this is what I have done too. Which is why I ended up with two girls who absolutely did not fit the norm of society, and why I never play the girl who did end up fitting perfectly into her time, got married and lived happily ever after with her three children. I only ever play Ida on Christmas Eve or on birthdays, and last time I didn't even do that because Alice had her audition. Abigail and Joseph has 6 kids and 8 grandkids between them, I've played enough birthday parties by now.

Even if society forced people to behave or present in a certain way it doesn't mean that their characters weren't as diverse as in modern times. And it could also be interesting to play a character that doesn't fit into the society's expectations at the time (I always randomize traits so I would let the game decide that for me).
