Day 4 - Year 1300

The next day was much the same for Thomas in terms of work. He did some gardening and some fishing and after selling his hard-earned fish, he finally had enough money to buy some paint and canvases. He was so excited! He was so excited in fact that he spent the entire rest of the day painting. Well almost all of it.

“Thomas, this painting is wonderful!” his mother exclaimed. “You know, Simon Scott, who owns the tavern in Finchwick, is a bit of an art collector I hear. Maybe you ought to go and show him your art.”
https://i.ibb.co/vLz6LfF/10-19-23-1-49-02-PM.png
That sounded like a good idea to Thomas. He found Simon outside of The Gnome’s Arms Tavern. He showed him two of the pieces he had painted and Simon agreed that they were good. Thomas had some talent it seemed. He said that he would be happy to buy some of his paintings. Thomas sold one, but he kept his first painting; he wanted to give that one to Kimberly. Simon paid him a good amount for his second painting though, and Thomas returned home happily with some groceries.

They had fresh bread and cheese (better than the stale loaf that had been sitting on the counter for who knows how long now) and Elizabeth came to join them again. Since Thomas was closer in age to Elizabeth than he was to Anna, he did feel much closer to her. He was happy that she came over so often. John travelled for work, and so Elizabeth often visited home on those days.

Edward and Caitlin talked lovingly to each other as Thomas painted more that afternoon.
“Can you imagine? A famous painter in the family?” His father declared.
https://i.ibb.co/1mcrkRT/10-19-23-1-42-59-PM.png
Thomas blushed. “I’m not so good as that yet…” (In fact, this painting looks more his skill level. Also fame is turned off).
https://i.ibb.co/qWXq7bN/10-19-23-8-24-07-PM.png
His father talked to him later by the fire.
https://i.ibb.co/Hrpk3kj/10-19-23-8-25-03-PM.png
“I’m very proud of your hard work lately, son.”
“Thank you, Father.”
“You know, you are getting to be a man now and soon this farm will be yours.”
Thomas wondered where he was going with this.
“Well, your mother and I were thinking of going and staying with Anna and Richard for a while, just to help with the baby when it comes. Do you think you can manage the farm on your own?”
Thomas felt pleased that his father trusted him to run things while they were gone. “Of course, father. You can count on me to take care of things here.”
Thomas really was becoming a man. Elizabeth and Anna were both gone and married, and Anna was about to have a baby. Poor Caitlin felt like a hen whose chicks were all leaving the nest. What was she to do?

(Yeah, good luck with that...)
Apparently, playing in the mud is a good way to distract one’s mind from a mid-life crisis. Edward and Caitlin may not have the childish traits, but they sure do know how to have some fun.

Meanwhile, Thomas took the framed canvas off the wall and put it into a box to give to Kimberly.
Day 5 - Year 1301
https://i.ibb.co/7VNzNwQ/10-20-23-1-26-13-PM.png
1301 came with rain and cold. Even though it was raining, the laundry had to be done. Edward tried making friends with a fox that had been stalking around their garden. He thought that maybe if he just explained nicely that stealing was wrong, the fox wouldn’t steal their produce. It was a nice thought, but the fox didn’t seem to understand him. It did in fact steal on onion, and so Edward resorted to scaring it away instead.

Thomas harvested the rest of the onions, and the basil. They still had some crops that weren’t ready to harvest yet. Thomas had high hopes that with the money from his paintings, there would be much more to harvest next fall.

Caitlin and Edward decided to take advantage of Thomas being distracted in the garden.

Later, Thomas did some more painting and some fishing.
https://i.ibb.co/1zy9pFm/10-20-23-1-35-02-PM.png
He was becoming a skilled fisherman and could even fish in the pond by their home now.
https://i.ibb.co/XLcnft8/10-20-23-1-37-55-PM.png
Those fish weren’t too crafty for Thomas!
https://i.ibb.co/PWQFt4g/10-20-23-1-38-16-PM.png
On their trip in to town, Edward shared the news that he had registered with the farmers guild in Finchwick. He was happy to now officially be a contributing farmer for the welfare of Finchwick and all of Henford-on-Bagley.

Thomas was happy for him. Their little farm had sustained their family for so long, and now they were getting on and could sell more of their produce. And Thomas was getting better at painting as well. He’d been practicing as much as he could, using the money from his fish to buy paint and canvases. He brought his latest painting into The Gnome’s Arms Tavern to show it to Simon. John was there too, and he was very impressed with Thomas’s brushwork.

Simon paid Thomas for his latest painting. As he was leaving the tavern he spotted Kimberly again with her father. He managed to pull her aside so the two of them could talk.
He pulled her close and whispered into her ear, “Meet me later. At our spot.”
https://i.ibb.co/H7V3KqK/10-20-23-1-54-50-PM.png
Before Thomas could pull away, Kimberly pressed her lips to his in a kiss!
https://i.ibb.co/4R7688f/10-20-23-1-55-53-PM.png
Thomas was shocked, but his heart was soaring. It was the happiest moment of his life. He just hoped no one saw. Especially not Kimberly’s father!
https://i.ibb.co/T0G2k4n/10-20-23-1-56-05-PM.png
“I’m…I’m sorry,” she stammered.
https://i.ibb.co/17CP4DQ/10-20-23-1-56-16-PM.png
“Shh, it’s okay,” Thomas comforted her. “Just as long as no one saw.”
https://i.ibb.co/rkqrxVc/10-20-23-1-56-18-PM.png
“I’ll see you later then?” he asked her.
She nodded and they parted ways.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Later, the painting wrapped carefully in a box, Thomas met Kimberly under the gazebo by the ruins. He gave her the box.

https://i.ibb.co/Gsdv04Q/10-20-23-2-00-12-PM.png
She opened it and her eyes lit up. “Thomas, did you paint it? It’s wonderful!”
https://i.ibb.co/7vyqzK3/10-20-23-2-00-17-PM-2.png
“I was thinking of you while I was painting it.”
She handed him another rose then. “I got another rose from our garden for you. I’m so happy that I met you, Thomas.”

https://i.ibb.co/pxmkJbp/Screenshot-294.png
Thomas cleared his throat and he felt suddenly very nervous.
“Kimberly…there’s something I need to tell you.”
https://i.ibb.co/z6pzPTg/10-20-23-2-01-32-PM.png
“Yes?”
“I know…I know my family isn’t much. We don’t have much money, but I’m going to make something of myself. I’ve been selling my paintings to Simon Scott in Finchwick and…I can make enough money to make a comfortable home for you…that is, if you…” He seemed to be stumbling over his words. She smiled at him encouragingly. “What I mean is, I love you, and I want you to be my wife. Once I’ve made enough money to upgrade the cottage, I would like to ask your father if I can marry you. If you want.”
https://i.ibb.co/0JJm22g/10-20-23-2-01-34-PM.png
She took his hand gently and whispered, “That would make me very happy.”
Thomas leaned in and kissed her then.
https://i.ibb.co/Lpg6LFw/10-20-23-2-01-35-PM.png
He blushed and said, “I’ve been wanting to do that again ever since our first kiss in town.
https://i.ibb.co/zhL3zB9/10-20-23-2-01-41-PM.png
She grinned and kissed him on the cheek. “I’ll be waiting for you to talk with my father.”
https://i.ibb.co/jz3qTPJ/10-20-23-2-02-11-PM.png
“Soon,” he promised her.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
That night Thomas told his parents of his intentions to marry Kimberly. They were both very pleased, especially Caitlin.
https://i.ibb.co/tKzCN5X/10-20-23-2-06-58-PM.png
https://i.ibb.co/kyF81HT/10-20-23-2-07-38-PM.png
Edward said, “We will be staying with Anna and Richard for a while after the baby comes. You can fix up the cottage and have it ready by then. It should be quite comfortable for you and Kimberly.”
“Thank you, Father.”
After dinner, Thomas got to work on some more paintings.
https://i.ibb.co/fS6vBWV/10-20-23-2-11-32-PM.png
Caitlin couldn’t have been prouder of her son.
https://i.ibb.co/Bjt9hq4/10-20-23-2-10-55-PM.png
And Edward was so excited that he had to share the news with the newly grown hen.
“Goldie, our boy is getting married! And you…you can start laying eggs now for them! Good girl, Goldie!”
https://i.ibb.co/L6kbcpn/10-20-23-2-12-42-PM.png
She just clucked and flapped her wings at him, almost as if she understood she had a very important job to do.
