Base Game Updates & Pack Refreshes vs. DLC

(Sorry in advance for the Soap Box rant, I'm sure it's all been said before)

EA/The Sims desperately needs to invest time into fixing the game and repairing the lack of trust they have built with their players.

The game is constantly bugged and even the most dedicated players are endlessly frustrated, meanwhile it seems that EA is prioritizing spending developer time on churning out paid DLC as quickly as possible (which often feels unfinished and full of bugs).

If they want players to actually keep playing and keep spending money on DLC, they HAVE to regain some trust by investing in the base game and building good faith by offering more substantial free content updates (not just one or two news hairs or a couple of doors and windows), and refreshing some of the oldest packs (I'm so glad they did Spa Day and I wish they'd keep up that trend).

If EA offers some NEW content for FREE and fixes the existing base game and packs, they can bring back a lot of bored players who have dropped off the game - who might be willing to buy DLC if the game is actually working properly.

Let's hit paused on offering $100+ of DLC every year and just focus on fixing/improving what exists.

  • Bug fixes
  • Base Game content
  • Pack Refreshes

Current DLC:

18 Expansions Packs x $40 = $720

12 Game Packs x $20 =  $240

20 Stuff Packs x $10 = $200

44 Kits x $5 = $220

Total: $1,380 (as of March 2025)

And as a side note on DLC, I wish the paid content would really just be focused on more niche gameplay (ie occults, specific hobbies/skills) and CAS/BB. IMO it sucks some of the best new major gameplay features are stuck behind paywalls (small businesses from Business & Hobbies, rental lots from For Rent, seasons, family gameplay from Growing Together, etc.) - the things that have the most widespread impact on gameplay and that are used by the largest swath of players.

  • It also seems to me that EA has fallen into the misconception that offering free content would discourage players from purchasing DLC, but I think the opposite is true.

For those on-again-off-again players who have grown bored of the game and don't play on a regular basis, there is very little reason to invest MORE money into the game, just to get a few more play sessions in before growing bored again. BUT if there is consistently new free content updates, those players will probably play with more regularity and invest more of their time into the game - then there is incentive to spend money on a pack here and there that those players wouldn't otherwise buy.
