I really like your concept image of the neighbourhood. In the middle east they have hunting falcons, maybe they could add them as pets. Would work a bit like the crows from life and death, but there would be more interactions with training them and such. Love the idea of a spice market, they smell so nice and would be a good opportunity to introduce more spices to the cooking system.
