I do use an eat at table mod—to help keep Sims eating alone in odd places. But I noticed they have been standing and multi-tasking while eating. So I hope the upcoming feedback results in fixes to address this and for me to no longer need the mod.
I have a several schools of thought on food/cuisine/eating/etc.
First I think that a part of the issue is the gameplay relativity needs to be adjusted. Many things that should take less time take too much time and things that should take more time take too little time. Not to mention when you speed up the game it doesn't seem to speed up the actions too much (they often stagnate/stand still for a bit) but time seems to fly by.
A Sim should have enough time to wake up make breakfast, have breakfast with household before going to work, then come home, and make dinner without player completely micro managing time. A Sim should be able to have enough time in a day to at the very least have enough sleep, make 1-2 meals, work (or school) and have time for fun/social and maybe some other activities.
With that in mind if all Sims had an internal clock to eat or participate in meal times (unless player directed to ignore/override). Sims could naturally congregate at or near dinning tables or rooms "waiting" (but still may do some autonomy as long as it is in the room or next room—such as start socializing with each other or reading) to see if a meal is going to be called (even if hunger is in green), if a meal is not "called" (no Sims prepped/made a meal or player did not pull out a dish from the fridge and select "call to meal") they then revert back to normal autonomy. Basically, it doesn't overtake their autonomy too much, but keep them near enough that when a meal is called they are their/same similar distance so they are eating a the same time.
Those with certain traits (including likes cooking) or cooking skills of a high enough level, should naturally want to cook at a similar time. Slightly before other Sims would naturally congregate, or if applicable before they need to go to work (so enough time to wakeup, cook, eat and leave for work on time autonomously), to prep and cook a meal and that meal is family or party (not single).
Somewhat aligning cooking before other Sims start congregating for meals around meal times. It would also be helpful if multiple Sims have traits/skills to be the meal prepper only the one will actually do it and not both try and end up cancelling each other as they get in each other's way. This could be a player direct or a player assigned role. Otherwise if no trait or cooking leaning Sim it need to be player completely directed.
It would be nice that those either in a household that doesn't call meal/do meals at natural meal times, then can cook or grab leftovers autonomously when hungry instead of when the internal clock/timer says so (so those with hardly hungry reward trait, etc. are more independent).
Also, it be great to fix/adjust weight gaining, as having multiple "call to meal" in a day even when not hungry would make Sims fat too fast, just to have the feeling of real life meal times—in ones gameplay.
Drinks, I think those who like mixology or have mixology skill should be the only ones autonomously making/mixing drinks on a home lot. And other Sims will only grab drinks on a home lot if already made (player directed or by Sims with the skill). Maybe if a Sims is autonomously making drinks it will internally invite other Sims to sit at the bar or be near the bar while they do this, and disperse when the Sim stops making drinks. With this players and Sims who don't think to have Mixology gameplay on a home lot can keep it player directed or likes/skill autonomy only.
Tea/coffee drinkers would be great if (when not player directed), have natural internal times to do this as well, like in the morning after they wake up before/after first meal, and/or before/after evening meal. I think that Tea/coffee drinkers and Mixology/Nectar drinkers should have different drinking drives. As tea/coffee is more lifestyle and mixology/nectar is more social/fun.
Chopsticks! Please, please have more meals that can be eaten with chopsticks, I never want my chopstick preference Sim eating with a fork unless is it a dessert.
Cuisine type, I'd love if favourite food or cuisines could be selected per Sim so they are more likely to cook their favourite cuisines (unless Simply Living challenge then it is what you have ingredients for). I also think Sims should learn/go back to learning recipes, so you can have each Sim unique in their own internal cookbook capabilities. In Sims 3 I made my homemaker only learn/make Asian specific foods, as they all have the secret Asian Culture trait, for immersion purposes.
Dine Out, I'd love if experimental meals could be family/party serving options as well.
