Don't let your pets near the pee bushes, as that's what causes the constant squirrel/skunk encounters. I agree it's way over-tuned. If you're in a world that has them in the neighborhood, fence the yard and lock the gate for pets (or even just keep them indoors and lock the door). If you placed one on your lot, either remove it or fence it off.
Also, in a way, you can change the speed? There's the three speeds at the bottom, that change how fast the clock/animations go, and there's also the lifespan settings in the game settings. You can even turn aging off entirely, and only age them up when you're ready, if you want to spend more time in a particular life stage.
There's also reward traits to slow or stop need decay if you earn the satisfaction points to buy them.
