No need to go too far to find an example, this has already happened to EA/Maxis with one of their most beloved franchises. With their last SimCity, they took a strange route, sacrificing important features in exchange for others no one asked for. Then, a much less known developer simply created the game people wanted, sending a decades-old franchise into oblivion.
Although many, like me, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the current installment, I think we haven't been consistent with our wallets. And the thing is, despite everything, The Sims 4 is not a bad game, and most importantly, it's still the only one so far. But, without a doubt, if new and better options appear, that money will go elsewhere. Our complaints and desires have already been widely expressed, we can only wait and see what happens.
