Stop breaking OneDrive

Storing Sims files in Documents is insane. They're not documents.

Every piece of advice I've seen on this is "Disable One Drive syncing for documents".

I use OneDrive. I like it. But EA makes using it and having Sims on the same machine impossible.

All that's required is a simple setting that lets you store the data files in any location you choose. That's it. Programming 101.

Telling people to disable OneDrive is nuts.

Please fix this mindbogglingly simple issue!

  • One Drive is for back-up so it should be able to accept any type of file. I don't see how the game can break it.

Because it  takes up all the storage capacity that should be for your documents, pictures, etc, not game data.

You could store your documents and pictures some place else like a different drive or directory and leave Documents for the Sims.

I agree that this is an issue that needs to be solved. I personally pause OneDrive before any sims session that usually prevents the lag that comes with OneDrive until they decide to fix this.

That makes no sense at all and it's completely backwards to how it should be. If I do then then my documents don't get stored on OneDrive.

Besides, the 5GB standard with OneDrive is nowhere near big enough for all the Sims files.

  • Try setting up a simple USB external disk. I use 4 of them, all 1Tb full size drives, for different uses, they run a lot faster than using one drive and its somewhat small off system storage space. They are also a lot cheaper in the long run.

I've been using OneDrive with Windows 11 for a year with no problems. The idea of turning off a huge part of the Windows OS (and a useful one at that!) seemed silly to me.

What I did was right click on my EA folder inside the Documents folder and use the command "always keep on this device" to keep a local copy of the EA folder so it's not trying to run anything from OneDrive when the game is playing (at least that how I understand it to be working).

When I exit the game, OneDrive then does it's little synching thing and all the files in the EA folder get the green check mark and I can see in the status bar (lower right) when OneDrive is done synching and then shut down my computer. This seems to be working okay. I haven't lost anything yet. 🤞

You can set OneDrive to not read specific folders in your documents folder. I used to do that. I now only use Onedrive to backup files on my laptop every 6 months. The EA folder was not the only folder that made using Onedrive more of a headache than a helpful tool. Personally, we purchased an external hard drive to back up important folders instead.

The game doesn't break onedrive, onedrive breaks the game. It's not just a onedrive space issue it will tear sims 4 files to shreads and unnecessarily duplicate sims files within the ea folder.
