Suggestion: Add Occult Investigators and Supernatural Containment Gameplay
I'd love to see The Sims 4 expand its supernatural gameplay by introducing occult hunters, paranormal investigators, and other Sims who specialize in dealing with supernatural creatures and magical phenomena.
Before going further, I'd like to emphasize that this suggestion is not anti-occult. In fact, I love playing occult Sims and some of my favorite households have been vampires, spellcasters, werewolves, ghosts, and other supernatural life states. This suggestion is coming from a storytelling perspective rather than a game balance perspective.
What I'm interested in is creating more interactions between occult and non-occult Sims, along with additional folklore-inspired gameplay systems.
Investigation and Containment Rather Than Combat
Given the tone of The Sims 4, I wouldn't expect occult hunting to focus on harming supernatural Sims. Instead, it could revolve around investigating, containing, tracking, studying, negotiating with, or temporarily restraining them.
Examples could include:
- Paranormal investigators tracking hauntings and identifying spirits.
- Vampire hunters specializing in wards, barriers, and protective folklore.
- Magical inspectors responding to rogue spellcasters and magical accidents.
- Werewolf trackers helping calm or capture rampaging werewolves.
- Fairy experts protecting magical habitats and studying fairy activity.
- Professional occult researchers who document supernatural phenomena.
Folklore-Based Tools
This system could naturally connect to occult wards and supernatural protections such as:
- Salt lines that repel or contain ghosts.
- Running water that vampires cannot cross.
- Wolfsbane that affects werewolves.
- Iron wards that repel fairies.
- Horseshoes and other protective charms.
- Anti-magic barriers that suppress spellcasting.
- Counting charms such as rice, buttons, seeds, beads, or coins that distract vampires.
These objects could serve both protective and containment purposes depending on how players use them.
For example:
- A family might use a salt line to keep ghosts out.
- A paranormal investigator might summon a ghost inside a salt-circle containment zone.
- A spellcaster could place magical barriers around a research laboratory.
- A vampire hunter could use folklore-inspired traps rather than direct confrontation.
More Interactive Occult Stories
One reason I'd love to see these mechanics is because they create memorable stories.
Imagine:
- A spellcaster attempts to cast a fireball at a rival only for the spell to fizzle out against an invisible anti-magic ward.
- A vampire arrives at a house intending to feed, only to get distracted counting scattered rice until sunrise.
- A ghost is accidentally trapped within a containment circle during a séance.
- A werewolf becomes frustrated when entering a wolfsbane-protected property.
- A fairy discovers they cannot cross a cold iron gate protecting a garden.
These types of interactions make occults feel more connected to the world around them.
Optional and Configurable
Ideally, these systems would be optional and configurable.
Players who want unrestricted occult gameplay could ignore them entirely, while players who enjoy folklore, supernatural mysteries, paranormal investigation, monster hunters, magical academies, haunted houses, or occult worldbuilding could choose to use them.
Why I'd Like to See This
I'm not asking for occults to be weakened. I'm actually very pro-occult gameplay.
What I'd like is more depth, more worldbuilding, and more storytelling opportunities.
To me, a world where vampires have to navigate folklore protections, ghosts can be contained, spellcasters encounter magical wards, and paranormal investigators actively interact with supernatural phenomena feels far more alive than a world where supernatural powers exist without any meaningful response from the people around them.
Occults are most interesting when they feel like part of the setting rather than simply a collection of powers, and I think folklore-inspired hunting, investigation, protection, and containment systems would add a lot of flavor to the game.
