Adopting an orphaned sim

Hello! Just had the strangest day of Sims in quite a while.

My sister and I recently bought the Horse Ranch pack, and we have been playing around with it. I have a Young Adult couple (who, as of now, just had their first baby. On NYE, at that! They watched the countdown at the hospital.) who are running a fledgling ranch.

They met Umber and Juniper Grove during the Welcome Wagon but didn’t become close friends due to the fact I kept them busy running the ranch instead. The other day, however, they both received a call that Juniper had died. When Umber invited one of my sims over, I sent him over to comfort the grieving family.

Well, my sim woke up the next day to the news that Umber had died too. (My best guess is that they both froze to death, but I cannot confirm.)

Now Wren (and the horses) are still kicking around in game. Questions are as follows: 1) why is Wren still around? are Umber and Juniper still hanging out as ghost parents? is the horse somehow a legal guardian for the child? is it just an oversight? 2) is there a way to properly adopt Wren and the horses into my household, or is “add to household” my best option?
