Adoptions and Name Changes

The Story:

Dr. Sawyer Helms was at work one day when Layton Oakes came in with obvious signs of bloaty head.  After Dr. Helms treated Mr. Oakes, the teen left.  Several days later, out of the blue, Layton called Dr. Sawyer and invited him to his birthday party.  The two hit it off well and in time started dating.

Now, the two are newly weds and Layton has moved in with Dr. Helms and his son, Barry.  Unfortunately, Layton would like to change his name to Helms but can not find a solution.

The Question:

Shouldn't the last names have changed during the wedding ceremony?

The Details:

Platform: Xbox One

Game: Sims 4

Expansion Packs:

      4 Seasons

      Get to Work

  • Sorry about the heading.  It was going to be a two question situation but the adoption part didn't make sense since Barry's father is still living.

  • @PenguinFoop I don't think the names change on their own without a mod or a cheat. MCCC mod will handle that automatically. If you prefer a cheat, using the cheat "cas.fulleditmode on" then taking the sim into CAS will allow you to change their name.
  • @Psychotps Thanks for the reply. I found the way to do it without cheats. Click on a dresser and choose "change sim" or something like that. Then you can change the last name.

I just thought that it made sense (like in Sims 3), that the last name would automatically change to that of the sim that initiated the marriage ceremony.

It's cool that the game lets you do that. Personally, I've always used MCCC so I just set it up and basically forget about it.

The only thing that I still haven't gotten quite right are the pregnancy rates. It takes ages. Fine tuning MCCC then playing for weeks to see how the automated townie birth rates adjust over the generations.

@PenguinFoop, my guess as to why the names don't automatically change is that it is still possible for the names to change the way you don't want it to, and of course if it automatically changes you can't combine names or hyphenate them.  So if Cassandra Goth marries Malcom Landgraab, does he become Malcom Goth; does she become Cassandra Landgraab, or do they both get last names of either Goth-Landgraab, Landgraab-Goth, or do they choose Goth Landgraab, or Landgraab Goth? 🤨😃  So, unless a little box pops up to let you pick what the new family's name will be, it is best to let them just keep their old last names. 😉
