Save As... Question

This might be a dumb question, but I'm not totally sure how saving works. Let's say I have a game that I call "Game 1". I save it by choosing "Save" on the menu and then selecting the picture of that game to save it again before closing.

So, if I take Game 1, then use "Save As" and save it as Game 2, is Game 2 considered a new save? Or is it still a legacy save? In other words, do I have to start a new game from scratch in order for it to be a new save?

I'm on Xbox so not sure whether this applies to PC. I hope that made sense!

I'm not 100% if I understand your question correctly but basically, if you use save, the current game is overwritten and you no longer have access to the old version.

If you use save as, a new save slot is created with the same state your current game is in. So it's basically a exact copy of your save. They are two separate saves and you can play them separately and they end up in different states once you play them.

You can think of it like making a copy of a piece of paper. If you do that, you end up with two exact copies of each other but you can then write something on the copy and it wouldn't have any influence on the original.

Does that answer your question ?

Thanks for that info. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is when updates are issued for bug fixes, and it says that it won't work for the legacy saves, if I save as and make the copy, will the bug fixes be applied to that new file that I saved as?

Im on console too and have the same legacy family saved in 3 different slots (save game 1, 4 and 6 when you look at the list of saves) one of my sims in the family has got the wearing a hat in the shower bug that wasn't fixed for existing saves but was for brand new saves and he still wears the hat in all three saves. One of the copy saves (save slot 4) was made after that bug fix update was released so it carried over 😕

    Hi fatalmoon65

it usually means that if something was bugged before the patch, it will also stay bugged afterwards. Doesn't matter if you upload something to the gallery and re-download or if you create a copy of the save. It does not magically fix the error.

So if you take the example of RheaFallout with the clothing above, if you place them in a new save or use save as they will still be bugged. If they use a new Sim on the same save, it won't occur though. So it's all about the Sim that has the issue. Same for the black photos. The save as copy is exactly the same.

If you use my example with the piece of paper, if the text had say a typo on that paper, it will also be there on the copy, but if you re-rewrite the whole text, it will be gone (hopefully unless you make the same mistake again :D)

I was wondering if I split the hat bug sim from the household and move him out then save in a new slot so he's the only one that shows in the save file picture and on the main menu does that count as a "new save" or is it considered a continuation of the save he originated from? 🤔

  • The save as feature allows you to pick a new slot to make a new save. I use the save as feature to have 2 different saves as rollbacks, in case of corruption. Not sure how many slots are allowed on console, but PC allows me a seemly infinate amount of save slots.

Issues with Sims can vary. Some are fixed if you put them in a new save, some persist in a new save so the short answer is: Depends.

Outfits usually don't get reset cause the game doesn't want to mess with what you have set up. On which outfits do you have stuck hats ? On the nude ones ? On console it's very hard to fix them but an option would be to ask someone on PC to reset the outfit for you with the mod and then reupload them for you to the gallery and then you can continue with that Sim.

It would be a different Sim though without the relationships and everything if you put them back into your original save.

Yes, I think it's the nude hat bug but It's a bit of a weird one because he's a mermaid, the hat, a base game do rag that I didn't add to any of his outfits in CAS only shows up when he's in the shower, he doesn't wear it when he's in the bath or swimming as he's in his mer form in those instances. He doesn't have it on any of his outfit categories in CAS including his mer form, he's a science baby from a multi generation mermaid mother, he doesn't have a father so his mer form is completely different from his everyday sim form, different eyes, nose, mouth, face shape, body shape etc. It's like the hat is hidden/invisible until he takes a shower. On a side note he is the only science baby, his three brothers and one sister are natural born from two mermaid parents so I don't know if that has something to do with him being the only one afflicted with the hat bug? That's why I was wondering if he's stuck with the hat forever even if I did split him from the household because his existence is a little convoluted 😅 would uploading him to the gallery to mod reset him still work with him??

You would need to start a brand new game entirely. The "save as" feature isn't a "new game" it is just making a another copy of the same legacy save in another save slot. If a sim is bugged, you can try to save them to the gallery and see if they are bugged.  Creating a whole brand new game and dropping the sim from the gallery into it would tell if the sim is bugged in any way or if it is just first orginal save they were in.
