Broken Horseback Riding?

I don't play much with the horseback riding, but I rolled a sim that has the horse lover trait and thought, why not? The why not: the sims are unable to mount and ride the horses. they mount and immediately dismount. Anyone else have this problem? and is there a solution I missed? I am on a Mac, no mods or cc, game fully updated. thanks!
