Sorry to revive an old topic, but I have come to the conclusion that I can't select them because my co-stars leave the lot, and there isn't anyone to do a scene with! This is why it's always the double stage marks.
When I interact with with my co-stars AS SOON as I get to the studio, everything works fine because they stick around. If I don't interact with them right away, they leave the lot and I can't do scenes that require a co-star. Once I show up to the studio, there are roughly 15 sims standing in the parking lot, but after about 20 seconds, I wind up with about 5 or 6 sims remaining.

@erikthedud this is exactly the reason. I w as s having the same issue. I could complete any scenes that were just me, but anything with 2 X Mark's on the ground was unable to be completed. It doesn't all the time. But it sucks when it does
