CAS items not fitting properly on expanded waist

Something I've run into with more recent CAS items (maybe starting around Cottage Living) is that if you make the waist of a sim any larger than the smallest waist option, the clothing gets this weird bulge to it that looks really unnatural and boxy. It mostly happens with what are meant to be loose-fitting tops and full body outfits, but I've seen it with other outfit choices as well. I don't notice it as much on bottoms. 

This is really concerning because it seems like the sims team is now creating outfits for very skinny bodies only and paying no attention to how it might look on anything larger than the skinniest option. I find this happens less with older CAS items, like all the base game clothes don't have this issue. 

This should be taken into consideration for future packs, but also needs to be fixed for current packs, otherwise many of the CAS items are unusable. I want my sims to reflect real life, and everyone being super skinny is definitely not realistic. Also, this oversight really affects fat bodies the most and is a whole issue in and of itself.
