Certain Sims can lose ability to eat

Good afternoon!

I have an uncommon (but common enough to destroy several families) problem with sims losing the ability to eat. They pick up food, do not eat it, then put it back down. The common wisdom is to remove cc beds.

Debug steps attempted:

  • I saved the sim to my gallery, removed all CC and mods except for a verbose logging mod, and started a new savegame.
  • In the new savegame, I imported the sim to a new lot.
  • In the new lot, I deleted all other sims and families, and put the sim on a blank lot with just a mailbox and a table.
  • I told the Sim to "Delicioso" a meal and eat it.
  • She picked up the food, sat down in front of it, and cancelled the action.

I thought maybe it is a problem in one of her Traits. I have a mod installed when she was originally added to my game that randomly adds Traits based on traits that were on her parents. used MCCC to delete all her Traits and clear any flags it would, then reloaded the game without MCCC installed. No luck.

The main PC is on a Ryzen 7 7700, 32GB, 4070 Super. I installed the game on an M2 Pro Mac Mini and the impacted characters are still having this problem. While I was on the Mac, I decided to see what happens if I let a bugged character sit without commands. They starved to death.

Here is the debug Interactions log from the most important time in the latest test:

I think the FinishingType.INTERACTION_INCOMPATIBILITY is the important part, but I can't figure out what's wrong with THIS sim.

I'd start a new savegame from scratch, but this still happens over multiple saves and eventually hits a character I want to play (or at least want to survive.)  I rescued one by talking a neighbor into turning her into a vampire, rescued another couple by moving them to a new home then marked as "unplayed" so they can carry the family line, but now I'm just so sick of it I have to open a support ticket.

I am putting a savegame on Google Drive as the instructions suggest. I hope a developer can load this character and see a more detailed debug log and see exactly what the INTERACTION_INCOMPATIBILITY is, and how I can remove it from my sim. In addition to my specific problem, I hope this will help the dozens of other users reporting issues with eating sims when cc items are present. Maybe it's the same flag?

Thank you!

@thoughtfix Will try on your set of packs. I don't think the issue is a pack you have but one you don't have that's why I needed the packs you own.

EDIT: I can duplicate it on your set of packs so now to narrow down which missing pack is causing issues).

EDIT EDIT: Enabling Jungle Adventure fixes it (this is not a recommendation to buy the pack). Wonder if some mod added something to your Sim that was related to the pack and now fails because the pack isn't present.

When I have the pack enabled the Sim gets a moodlet from the pack, It's called overwhelming Flavor and it says that the Sim can't eat the whole meal. My guess is that this is what's causing the issue.

You created the Sim from scratch right ? Have you also been using mods or just CC ? I don't think cc would add this moodlet but maybe it was some mod that had a component for JA.

  • @thoughtfix  Do you use the Sulani Culture Skill mod? I see you have Island Living and I’ve used that mod in the past. Double-checking its listed requirements, it doesn’t say it requires Jungle Adventure, just Island Living, but the mod seems very based on Jungle Adventure’s Selvadorada culture skill, and the moodlet @crinrict found is one Sims with low/no Selvadorada skill get when eating Selvadoradan food.

If you do use that mod, that might be one possible cause to explore - have your bugged Sims previously tried to eat Sulani foods with low Sulani skill?

  • You two are heroes and I hope EA pays you or otherwise rewards you for all your work.

To answer the question from @crinrict - This has happened on sims from scratch, but the one you're seeing was a modification of one from the Gallery. I cannot find her again to see the original, sadly. I have been using gameplay mods to add more autonomy (sims will first kiss and do other romance, get out of sun if they're vampires, and do other fun stuff to avoid excessive death and stale neighborhoods) but my only CC comes in when I download a lot or household from the Gallery (which is frequent.)

@PipMenaceI don't have Jungle Adventures or the mod you mentioned.

I loaded her up again and made a full dump of the sim logs for both her and her Duplicato clone. I compared them side by side, line by line, and only saw a few food/hunger related differences:

    • Expected differences are shown, like one is a temporary clone, on a foreign lot, and lived a different number of days.
    • The clone has some traits show up from nowhere, and I can't explain it:  BeachBum_LaidBack and GynRat, for example, are not on the original but showed up on this one clone.
    • The clone has buff_Food_HasEatenRecently and buff_Food_HasEatenToday_Hidden but the original does not, which is likely because .. well .. she ate!
    • The clone has a commodity_PoliteHunger that's not present on the original.
    • No mention of anything like overwhelming flavor (for either string and either log)

By themselves, none of them seem odd to me. I didn't see any trait relating to Sulani food, but it's possible some CC or DLC sets a property that the game interprets as the "overwhelming flavor" but tnen doesn't show it when Jungle Adventures is missing.  I'll see if I can find any mods that get rid of that buff first, then see if I can justify Jungle Adventures (like if I'd buy it eventually anyway or leave it off.)  I found a mod that says it removes the buff from the food, but looking at it in Sims 4 Studio, it seems it just removes it from the food before it's eaten and characters that have it have to wait for it to fall off. I could be reading it wrong, though: I just yesterday started learning about modding.

Thanks to the folks in Scumbumbo's Discord (Rest in peace, mod master Scumbumbo) for help generating the character logs.

I went ahead and $purchased Jungle Adventures$ even though most of that content isn't my bag, but LGR didn't hate it and I trust him.

I saw exactly what you saw: A debuff that didn't exist until I owned that DLC. I used UI Cheats to remove the debuff, and now she can eat. I am going to do the same for all my impacted sims in my main save

    .

Thank you for the in-depth investigation. There is a bug here that EA has to address: the ability for a sim to get a sim-killing debuff from a DLC that is not owned by the user. Even if it is introduced from CC/Mods, it should not be enabled in the game code until the DLC is enabled by the user. As far as which mod or CC introduced it - I have no idea! I've had a lot of mods come in and out as I try to find a stable install, and purchased a handful of DLC over the winter so it could be anything.  If I find it, I'll post back here.

As an in-game help thread, I am marking this as Resolved. I'd like to reference this in Bug Reports thread with the above (Users can get buffs/debuffs from DLC without having that DLC installed) topic. Would that get moved to Game Issues too?

Again you're all fantastic, the mod community is fantastic, and it makes me wish there were more comprehensive docs for modders that would allow modders to do realtime inspections of Sims to see what's going on. THANK YOU!

@thoughtfix Did you have all your problem Sims from the gallery or just this one ?

As for this being considered a bug, it depends if it was a mod or simply the gallery that added the buff for you. Usually, for mods stuff, you're on your own and EA doesn't have to fix it.

Will talk to the CM what they think. I would hold off making a new report for now cause if CM says they want to look into it, it'll be moved back to bugs.

  • Hi again!

With the half-dozen or so previous Sims, exhibiting this problem, I haven't tracked which came from the Gallery and which were handmade families, game generated, or descendant families. This one Sim is the only one I took as far as isolating and uploading her to the Gallery to see if the bugged property/debuff was present when downloaded.

Here's how I would pitch it to the CM: I'd put in three bug reports:

1: Figure out how a player who does not own a DLC can get a DLC-specific debuff on Sims and patch the game to block unowned debuff effects on characters.

2: Figure out how the Overwhelmed debuff could carry into the Gallery. Ideally, Gallery sims should be free of buffs/debuffs when downloaded.

3: Figure out why the Overwhelmed debuff did not clear and allowed the Sim to starve to death.

The two likely patches would be:

1: Make sure no properties of a Household imported from the Gallery are ephemeral properties (Needs, mood, buffs) and only hard properties (relationships, body definitions, skills, stuff that requires user intervention to change.)  This patch would be in the code that handles the transition of a Household to the player's neighborhood and serve to clean up the import for compatibility.

2: On game loading, scan all active characters for any properties (visible or hidden, rigid or ephemeral) that are specific to any given DLC and remove them if that DLC is not present. This already happens in build mode objects and the user is notified when build mode objects are removed because the DLC is not active.

Sorry if that's too much information. My "site reliability engineering" mind kicked in for a while there and scanned this as an incident postmortem. When I get hired for a new SRE job, I promise to be quieter!

@thoughtfix I guess it all depends if it was a mod that did it or the game. Since you had multiple, my guess it's a mod.

There are several threads already for stuff carrying through the gallery in the bug forum so please scan for those before creating any new threads.
