are you using mods and cc in your game ?
Have you tried a new save game for testing purposes to see if you have the same issues occurring ?

No, I don't have any cc or mods in my game. I've never used them.
Concerning the save file in question, this is a fairly new file, made after the November 7 or 8th patch. It's a recovered save, as I was hit wit the Error: 102 bug. I was able to get my sims back by recovering the save. I could try sometime to make another save file and see if this is occurring.

I've tried the place mat thing and that works fine in my game so yeah, there could be some corruption in your save causing this.
