Is 8 the maximum number? Will building a multi-story / transferring to a new household expand the capacity?
@HayesKerr, no, the only thing that will expand your household capacity is a Mod. But you have to do upkeep with your Mods if you use them, as EA doesn't support their use, they only allow their use. 😉

There aren't any cheat codes to add more than 8 Sims like puglover said only mods but they are more trouble than they are worth I had a few but I ended up deleting them it's to much maintenance.
@HayesKerr Keep this in mind if you get a mod to add more than 8 sims to a household. While mods will add more than sims to a household, you cannot edit the entire household in CAS, just 8. If you try to anyway, you lose all the sims over 8 and you don't have any control over which sims disappear.
I agree that any mod (like TwistedMexi's Fullhouse) that allows more than 8 sims in a household is very dangerous and may corrupt your save game file if not updated. But even when up-to-date, they may cause horrendous glitches and various save/load errors when certain bugs interact with one another. Also, what CGrant56 said is absolutely true. I would stay very far away from them.
@HayesKerr, sorry, but I had to step away for a bit. But I see that others have answered your second question.😇 They are correct in that you can only change the number of Sims in a household with a Mod, and that many mods like this are unstable and not worth the risk. 😢 The game just wasn't built on handling that many Sims. 🤨
@HayesKerrYes and no. Without mods, 8 is max. You won't be able to go higher. The MCCC mod will allow it but you have to use MCCC to modify in CAS whenever you want to.
If you use MCCC to have more than 8 and use the vanilla CAS cheat, things will break if you have more than 8 so you always have to use MCCC to modify in CAS if you have more than 8.
@HayesKerr I've had 11 sims in a household... but only 8 can be controlled without Mods (with the exception of pets, which also count in the 8). I never use Mods or CC. I had absolutely no problems caused by the size of the household this way.
Really felt I got full use of my butler!
In the household I had 11 sims in 2 were roomies and 1 was a butler because:
Butler & Servo trivia: Another cool dynamic... I moved the pet out of the household to make and add a Servo. (Servo counts toward the 8 household sims) Servo needs to be maintained frequently. I found that my butler continually and autonomously would be right there to maintain the Servo! (Butlers have high maintenance skills.)
Roommates come with "Discover University" (DU). Roommates don't need to have anything to do with campus, though, or with being students. You can have roommates in any of your worlds/communities if you own DU.
Butlers come with the "Vintage Glamour" pack.
