Meals at University

So far, I've only had two sims attend University.  I was a little frustrated by the meal options when living in the Dorms.  They either have to purchase food from the vendors or have quick meals from a mini-fridge or microwave.  Although, if they have too many quick meals they get a negative, undernourished moodlet.  Some of the meals at the commons are free but the options are limited.  I tried to add a kitchen to the dorm in build mode but stoves / ovens are not allowed in the dorms.  I did some research and found a couple posts that suggested adding a vendor in the dorm.  I haven't tried that, mainly because I wanted an option for a variety of meals that didn't involve paying for them.  So, I added a kitchen in the commons building and it's great.  My sim prepares meals, puts them in personal inventory, then keeps them in the mini-fridge.  Sometimes the roommates will grab servings but at least my sim has an option for cooking.  How do you handle meals for your sims at University?

  • @JonaO703 Hi there,  those are good suggestions, if nobody brings a meal into the dorms, i take my sims out to eat,  to Foxbury University at one of the internet cafe's and can grab meals for free, well i think its actually added to what they owe back when they finish the course.  Anyway, they can go for breakfast, lunch and dinner here.  And they have one at Britechester to, its not an internet cafe, more a library and place where they can increase learning via the computers.  At this one it charges for the meals.  I think they are at the University Commons building area.

@TGamez1 Thanks!  Yes, I tried those things as well.  At first, sims were just bringing in cookies and such but sometimes they brought other things like lobster thermidor lol  My sim also went to the commons and most items were "free" but the selection wasn't great.  Of course, there was also the shish kabab food truck.  All of these things are good and they do remind me of my time in college, having to eat out a lot and wondering where my next meal would come from.  It's too bad the developers didn't create an actual cafeteria with regular menu options.  Then I thought about that food being brought in and decided that adding a kitchen could give my sim the ability to cook his own meals.  This way he can have a stock of food and grab something to eat while studying without having to go out. I suppose a sim could maybe visit friends or family to cook things at their homes.  I also remember rationing many leftover plates from dinners at home when I was in college.

  • @JonaO703 this might sound ridiculous but when I have issues feeding my sims I usually buy/grow fruits and veggies that I keep in their inventories and feed them that, I mean, it's fast, they get happy and everything is fixed. I agree that the university and food is a little problematic and that's why I avoid them living at the dorms and just make them study from home because it's so damn annoying.

@MalikhooliaD That doesn't sound ridiculous at all.  I like the idea of keeping fruits and veggies in the inventory, especially for those times when I've neglected their hunger and don't have time to cook.  I've noticed fruits and veggies don't spoil, so sims can keep them for as long as needed.  It's a good idea!  I completely understand your misgivings about having sims in the dorms.  There are a number of annoying things about it.  For me, it's part of the experience though.  I guess it helps me appreciate not having roommates?  lol  I've pretty much gotten fed up with it and moved my sims off campus after the second term. :-)

  • @JonaO703 I have seen a place outside where they can bbq some food.  But a fridge would be a great idea as it would last longer in there. Maybe a mini fridge would fix this? lol

@TGamez1 Oh!  The BBQ is a great idea.  I'll look for those too.  I wasn't really looking for a "fix" though.  I mainly wanted to share my idea for adding a kitchen to the commons and I was also curious about other players' ideas for how to feed the starving students at Uni. :-)

  • I am happy to eat the meals provided in the dorm but most days no food appears.  Does that happen to anyone else?  It puts me off my sims living in the big dorms.  Having a vendor in the dorms is a good idea though - thanks for the tip!

@chairchair  Thanks!  After seeing your post, I decided to see for myself if I could add a vendor to the dorms.  It was pretty easy actually.  I had to remove some of the seating to accommodate the cafeteria stand and to provide tables for the students.  In build mode, select "objects by function" and search for the Bon Appetit Cafeteria.  Once you're back in live mode, the game will automatically send a vendor to operate the stand.  I still like being able to cook at the commons but I will definitely use this the next time I have a sim in the dorms.  I really just like the idea of my sims being able to get meals without leaving the dorm and without relying on quick meals or food to appear.
