I've had similar problems - 1 a sim not going to have a bath or 2 going in to a room that's been locked (although, I've never had a problem with them going up stairs)...
1 - A light fixture has got in the way (if you're using a Tudor-style chandelier you'll see sims walk around it rather than walk directly under it) and I've either had to choose a smaller light or place the light somewhere else...
2 - A door locked when I've saved the lot and then downloaded is still locked... Just simply click on the door and make sure the door is not locked - it could be locked for 'everyone' or 'everyone <insert one of your friend's characters that isn't your currently played sim>'... That's happened to me when I've locked a door for 'everyone but <character name>', then saved a lot, then downloaded it to save building time (effectively a Copy/Paste thing) and then introduced a new household to that copied abode...
Sometimes, that, or when something like I've mentioned, might mean they wouldn't even move from the spot from where they're at, at the moment of clicking and could be the reason the sims aren't . I'm not playing with Real of Magic or Vampire Diaries, so I don't know if it could be something else (like, say, the door or stairs not being wide enough?)...
Apart from what I've mentioned from my own experience, I'm not sure, but I hope this helps (if only to rule something out) to resolve your issue...
Hope you're well.
Regards,
Jonny.
