New Family Tree

I checked, this is my large rotational save that has a lot of intermarrying, my cousin married your sister kind of thing. Here is what I have discovered:

  • The more confusing the intermarried ones are, the trickier it can be to follow all the lines correctly; otherwise, it shows everything. I even had one infant on the same tree, like the child is its own second cousin once removed or something like that.
  • There are grand uncles and aunts
  • Spouses to aunts and uncles are gender-neutral as relatives-in-law; the same goes for cousins, spouses, and first cousins once removed, as far as I could tell. This might be a cultural thing. I call my aunts and uncles' spouses "aunt" and "uncle," depending on their gender preference, and the spouses of first cousins "cousins."
  • Family by marriage, further out, are distant in-laws, including spouses of grand aunts and uncles.
  • A parent's cousin and a cousin's child show the first-cousin one-removed step.
  • Second cousins and beyond are distant relatives, but you can easily check their parents: If one of their parents is the original parent's cousin (i.e., both that sim and the other sim have parents who are cousins), then they are second cousins. If both parents are distant cousins, you are looking at either a second cousin, a more distant cousin (like third or fourth, and maybe throw in some removals), or a first cousin more than once removed.
  • Familial relationships will be displayed over marriage relationships. Example in my game:
    • One guy woohooes a girl, but leaves when she "accidentally" gets pregnant because he wants to focus on his acting career, not on kids (he is self-absorbed). We will call him Boy 1
    • The guy's cousin is a childhood BFF of the girl, and he helps comfort her; eventually, they fall in love and get married. We will call this Boy 2
    • Boy 1's son shows the half-sibling relationship with his sister (the closest family relationship).
    • Boy 1's son refers to his stepdad as "paren'ts cousin" instead of "stepdad" because his stepdad is his dad's cousin.

This is all I've found so far. Has Anyone else found anything of note? I still need to check the profiles of some of the parents' cousins, distant relatives, etc to see if they show up there. If so, I can get rid of some of my custom labels, but not the ones that say "second cousin"!

    Update:

As far as I can tell with the profiles, if they are close enough not to need the word "distant" in their connection, including relative-in-law, they show up in the family category of the relationship panel, and the relationship shows up in the Sim's profile:

    And

If they are "distant" relatives or "distant in-laws", then the relationship is not in the profile page (as far as I've seen). Definitely keeping all those second-cousin custom labels. I can see why they did this, because in some cultures it is not only acceptable but encouraged. Also, growing up in the South, second cousins were sometimes called "kissing cousins," which I assume meant it was okay to flirt and kiss as long as it didn't go further. I didn't grow up knowing many of my second cousins beyond the occasional photo, so I wouldn't necessarily know them if I passed them on the street. Also, there was that one New Girl episode where she just happened to discover that her boyfriend was her second cousin; she was very happy they had been taking things slow.

  • "Relative-In-Law" is such an awkward-sounding name 💀 Like if you wanted something gender-neutral, people already just use the term "In-Law." That sounds way more natural.

Edit: Original message deleted. I had multiple browser tabs open and thought I was replying to a different post.

If you've not done so already, I'd recommend creating a new report on this. They won't look at it unless you do cos it's not creating a new workflow by commenting here.

Oops, for some reason, I was on the wrong browser tab when I wrote that.

  • This is all very interesting. I am a genealogist, by hobby, and it's interesting how you decide who is what level of cousin and how many times removed (which refers to the generation below yours. Wait until you learn you are a 16th cousin, nine times removed. Yeah. I have no clue just how to interpret that. I'm having all kinds of problems with my game since I turn on the Event. My bad. I haven't yet been able to check any of the cool things, yet, as a result.
