Did you find the urn or grave stone? if so then play the family for a little bit and the ghost of the sim you are currently mourning should come to visit one sim night soon. You can invite them to join your household. making ambrosia is one way to bring a ghost back to their corporeal form. If memory serves someone needs level 10 cooking skills to make it plus a death flower.
there are probably other avenues so this is just one idea. I did this once myself. While playing a one sim family, I watched a vampire from a different family just stand out in the sun until they burned to a crisp.
