I don't know if I just hadn't noticed it before or if this is something new to this update, but it let me claim the item "Draped Memorial Display Table" even though I don't have Life & Death, and say...
yes, that's exactly it. You basically own it now but you won't see it in your game without the pack. Once you get the pack, no matter when, you'll see it.
This was something they started with the last event and said, that's what's going to happen.
