Re: Can’t change residential lot into rental while my sim lives there

You actually should be able to do that. Residential Rental lot is a lot you can live in, just like Tiny Home and Haunted House, so you should be able to change into that lot type. In fact, I was able to, and doing so automatically made my household the property owner.

Of course do be mindful of the following: you cannot turn the following lots into Residential Rental lots:

  • Penthouses
  • Sulani waterfront lots

If your sim isn't on one of these lots, do try repairing the game.

Could you share the picture of how it looks like when you try to change the lot type?

Oh it just was greyed out…I thought you could change it but wasn’t sure. It also said I needed to own it.

@Gloxinia19 all you need to do is move your Sim out for a minute and change the lot type while it's unoccupied. Then get your Sim to purchase it as a business once it's a residential rental and if you want to live there you just have to choose or make a living area for your Sim (who becomes the landlord), then one for the tenant.

Here's the EA guide that should help.

  • @EgonVMIt's not possible to change an occupied lot type from a standard Residential type to a business in my game, never has been but it may vary by platform perhaps. Are you using mods/cheats? I'm on console and it's never been possible in all these years.
I've always had to move out my Sim. I can change lot traits but not types.

    No mods, no cheats, PC.

I went to check it out. I could change it to residential rental, but only if I entered the build mode from the live mode at my sim's home, not when entering it from the Manage Worlds.

In fact, the tooltip should also say so:

At my sim's home, it looks like this:

So yeah, I'm guessing that the issue described should not be normal.

My only suggestion here is to repair the game. Though the expansion pack is buggy after all...

  • @EgonVMThat's interesting, thanks for checking. I've tested both ways and neither works on Xbox Series X. Good to know moving forward that it may be possible for some but not others. Hadn't thought of it as being unusual since I've never been able to change an occupied lot to a business.
For Rent has a known bug with editing owned/occupied rental properties too so I find it is generally easier to move the Sim out. I wonder if this issue is connected. I'll be keeping an eye on it.
We don't have game repairs on console but we have troubleshooting steps/data resetting steps that haven't made a difference to this. It's certainly a buggy pack indeed.

Oh I was doing it from manage world. Weird you can’t do it from manage world. @simsplayer818 i am currently not using mods or CC.

    Yeah, it's weird.

My main guess is that it has to do with how the business property purchasing system is done. While yes, it's less of a purchase and more of a lot type change, I'm guessing it's to make sure that sims living in the current lot become its owner. Otherwise, the other household may become its owner for some reason.

But it's just a guess, so I might be wrong here.

@Gloxinia19 I can do it from manage worlds as long as the lot is vacant and then I return my Sim to it as the landlord. I just move them out briefly first.
It is a good pack but it has it's issues! I've had some bugs fixed but hadn't noticed this issue until now because of the way I was already doing it.
