What Does This Item Do?

What does this item do: Innovator's Award for Excellence in Science? Also, how can I tell what items do in game? Is there a mod or something I can use to tell me what items do? For example, how can...

The Innovator's Award for Excellence in Science is a trophy received as a career reward for reaching level 6 of the Tech Guru career. It's a focused emotional aura item - you can turn the aura on or off. If it's turned on, the aura automatically goes out to all sims in its area so any sim in the room will receive a focused moodlet until they move away from it. You can direct a sim to "view focused item" and that will give a focused moodlet that stays with them.
When I'm not sure about what something is or "does", I usually go into build mode and pick it up - that will show the item and stats down in the bottom right-hand corner of the build mode screen. Then I just hit the escape button so it doesn't change the placement. Pretty much the same thing as using the eyedropper tool. You can also use the search box to bring up the items and view their description.
I've had the same problem with figuring out stuff like you described. It's one of those things that I'm sure after you play for a while, you don't even think about it, but when you're first starting it can be confusing. I don't know about mods, so I don't know if there's a mod for identifying objects in live mode. Maybe someone else who's played more can help us out in that regard.
**Edit - sorry @jpkarlsen , we must have been replying at the same time. Do you know of any mod that lets you identify objects in live mode?
