That sounds exactly how adventurous
should work. Your cat leaves your lot and come back with surprising results. Based on the description for adventurous, I would assume they'd leave the same way as free spirit. However my dog doesn't do anything on his own. Now if walking around the backyard and sniffing the plants, flowers, hot tub etc is how adventurous works, then ok, but I get the feeling it should work exactly like free spirit does.
