A Shocking Secret Revealed!

I think I've figured out how most of the players who take photos of lightning get their shots. If the same Sim gets hit by lightning twice in short enough succession, they can gain a power called "Bring the Lightning". This comes from the Energized Buff "Hypercharged". For 12 hours, a Sim with this power can summon lightning to nearly any spot. By keeping the camera centered on the chosen point and using short pause bursts, you can easily catch lightning in frame midstrike. If you have the "Storm Chaser" Aspiration Reward Trait, the Sim can be assured survival of the needed lightning strikes. This very thing happened to me just now during a National Park vacation. (I can't post the pics I took. NSFW. So don't bother asking to see them. Just try it out for yourself if you feel so inclined.)

  • You're quite welcome. I always thought those lightning pics were random lucky shots, and maybe a few are, but I'm betting most of them are staged in a similar fashion. It's also got me wondering if the Hypercharged moodlet can be added via cheat. Something I'll have to look into in to future.
  • Those lightning if i recall correctly only happen in a split second, hard to believe someone can pause that fast to take a snapshot unless they were intentionally waiting for that to happen, Just like you said maybe few are legits.
  • Yeah, with the Hypercharged power, you can set your shot up in advance, choose the spot for the lightning strike, then use the tilde key to pause and unpause to basically frame-by-frame to be paused when the lightning strikes. After that, snap away. Also, the buff lasts 12 hours. If at first you don't succeed... Suffice to say, you have ample opportunity to get the perfect dynamic shot.

There's also a chance the sim could die when hit by lightning, so be careful.

Actually, if you have the Storm Chaser Reward Trait, your Sim is immune to lightning. Normally, a Sim struck by lightning get a negative Moodlet, then, if still under that Moodlet, gets struck again, they will die. The Storm Chaser Trait, on the other hand, gives a positive Moodlet when struck the first time, and the Hypercharged Moodlet on the second strike, granting the Bring the Lightning power. Storm Chaser is the key to the whole thing. It completely reverses the polarity on the consequences of lightning strikes.

I waited and watched in order to catch this shot: True enough, it's not the actual strike that's shown, but the place lighting up as it cracked over the glass ceiling. And, yeah, it took several strikes before I paused fast-enough. I got lucky!

  • Nice photo. The glass roof pattern cast all over the room is certainly eye-catching.

Thank you. I thought so, which is why I kept trying to capture the picture. I guess my patience was rewarded. ;)
