I put all my sims I make on the Gallery, so that I can simply re-download them if something goes wrong in my game. I suggest everyone puts their favorites, at least, up there, and so they are safe and sound! So, the story might be gone, but the sims remain! And....it always is terrible to lose your sims and your game, so, I feel for you, OP! Hope you can start fresh and have a good time!
Don't rely solely on any one back up method. Keep multiple back ups of anything you would hate to lose. The gallery can be one of them, but sites do go down and EA may one day decide to cull the gallery.
Have at least one back up that's not on your computer and not permanently attached to your computer. This is to prevent things like theft or bad viruses from making you start over from square one with regards to your saves and your CC/mods. The latter will be more important as Sims 4 gets older and CC and mod sites start going down for good.
I've got my Sims back ups on a second hard drive in my computer, on an external hard drive, and on flash drives (Sims 2 on one, Sims 3 on another, and I'll put Sims 4 back ups on another).
Pick one as your "short term" back up location. This is the one where you should keep the various back ups you keep in case of glitches in your game. The go back to an old save solution.
Your other two back ups should have back ups at key points. Start of a new generation. The completion of a major build that took you weeks to do. Basically whenever something major happens that would mark points of where you would want to replay. I wouldn't want to fully replay more than about a generation. So I would put in back ups every time I finished a generation and a new heir took over.
And that reminds me that it's time I update my own back ups.
