Also, if you're interested in adoption, while it's available in the base game of Sims you might be interested in one of Little Ms Sam's mods too. I use it and it's really fun. It's a foster home mod where you can register your Sims as being foster parents and you get notifications when kids need homes and then you can help find adoptive parents for them or adopt them yourself and stuff after they lived with you for a bit.
