You can "Pan for Crystals" in Crystal Valley (in waters/ponds/etc. of the appropriate depth). When successfully getting a crystal from panning you gain Gemology skill.
I wish we could do that in any water but I guess it makes sense that it's not everywhere. They could have added it to certain places though, like in Oasis Springs over by the mine.
I wish we had control of spawners and (invisible) water assignments so we can pan where we want so bad :)
