Sims tend to interact more with sims they find attractive.
Plus yes, Growing Together doesn't have turn-ons and turn-offs, but it has a system that affects how easy is for sims to befriend each other. I've explained Sim Characteristics and Social Compatibility further here, but you can choose which characteristics your sim likes and dislikes and based on that, social compatibility is calculated.
But if you say that, then I think we'll see if the attraction still comes into play with sims that your sim isn't interested in romancing with. The Sims 2 did that sims going against the gender preference didn't elicit attraction at all, but for The Sims 4, I don't know right now...
