I think @blewis823 said it was just certain ice creams that needed the maker? Just like the coffee - only the recipes that need the espresso machine need that placed to work, regular coffee doesn't. I would say that EA programmed a ton of recipes into the chef station, but either forgot some or just left them out, but if you have the objects that make those recipes you can then put them on the menu - or rather, they will get served lol.
