I personally find the sims 4 more focused on playing (young)adult without children than any previous version. I think it has several features that are annoying to combine with children/families.
- go on vacation in the jungle (kids miss school if you bring them along)
- solve the strangerville mystery (no gameplay for kids)
- active careers (no way of keeping track of the rest of the family)
- do the batuu aspirations (no kids gameplay)
- play werewolves, vampires or spellcaster (they can be combined with family but kids themselves can't do anything supernatural)
- play a student in a dorm
Some features can be done with kids but are just as enjoyable without
- focus on skiing and snowboarding
- become famous
- own a business (retail, restaurant or vet)
