I am not sure anymore. Sometimes I wish there was a competitor and see what would happen. I wish EA would allow the Sims team more freedom and allow them to make expansion packs bigger.
I think that we all would wish that there was a competitor. But when other game companies try to make similar life simulations and start out small then their games aren’t popular anyway. So they usually just stop making them.
The Sims games are special and without EA’s aggressive marketing technics and all the current fans they wouldn’t be worth making. Other game companies would have to start from scratch and start huge. But a huge game targeted more at older simmers wouldn’t likely sell well and to make a simple game for mainly the youngest teens would likely come too close to EA’s games. Such a game would target exactly the same simmers who already play EA’s games and we would have to chose because we likely wouldn’t buy all the packs for both games. But then the game from the other company would probably just lose and cost its company money.
So none of the other game companies have until now found a way to earn money on a similar game and I don’t think that this is very likely to change in the future.
