Apartments are great for sims with expensive tastes, but without an income to match.
Bills would get too high with a lot of fancy art/furniture/technology if you live on a regular lot. With apartments it's a set price no matter how much plum you fill it with.
The savings could be handy for a butler, or that new gaming rig you always wanted.
