Sure, if you sold a priceless artifact in the real world, you'd get a ton of money. But how likely is it for you to get two priceless artifacts from one tour? And I often get more than that just excavating. And that's not including the more mundane things I get dozens of per trip that sell between $400 - $900.
I personally don't mind it but I get the objection. I donate a lot of things for the buff, but my Sims are so crazy rich after a few weeks that there's no point in doing anything but playing and then going on an overnight to the jungle every once in awhile just because.
