I really feel that Maxis are too dependent on their community. And I worry that one day littlemssam, bienchen or deaderpool are going to retire from modding, and that's when a lot of things are going to backfire when there are no modders left that feel like helping maxis making the game better.
While you aren't wrong, it's not something to worry about. There's always someone else willing to step up. Today's TS4 modders who feel the most 'essential' are (mostly) completely different individuals from those we felt that way about in TS3 and the same was true from TS2 to TS3 and TS1 to TS2.
Deaderpool is to Twallan what Twallan was to J.M.Pescado, for example.
We shouldn't feel we "need" mods or modders and EA/Maxis shouldn't rely on them, but we also shouldn't expect there will ever be any kind of backfire on their (apparent) strategy in this regard. Over 20 years of history shows it just isn't going to happen.
That said, we should still never take them for granted, because that's just ungrateful. Modders certainly have earned our appreciation and respect, regardless of whether or not they are 'irreplaceable'.
Personally, my biggest fear is they will make the next iteration of the game not open to modding so readily. There has yet to be a Sims game in the franchise that was worth playing without mods. Just mho.
BTW, modders are so important and so in demand for the franchise that there are modders who make their entire living via Patreon/donations modding for this game. It's not their hobby, it's their actual career.
