This game works a lot like TS2 with 'triggers'. Letting in a vampire is a trigger for them to come back later to bite somebody. It's all in your control if you never let in those total strangers who just show up at night.
I think that's more anecdotal than anything. In most of my games, I've rarely had them try to break in and that's even when I was doing all the "triggers" to try to get break-ins to occur. There was one house in particular that they would often show up at night and knock on the door but they still only tried to break-in and bite one of my sims one time....the rest of the time they'd just want to take out the garbage and watch TV. Pretty much every other game save and every other house, they'd rarely get any vampires trying to break in. I had one of my sims go over to all of the houses of the vampires and talk to them all, invite them in if they knocked on the door, call them up and chat with them, invite them over, research vampire lore, talk about vampires to everyone and still nada...no break-ins or bite attempts. I think there's much more randomness involved than control.
