I'm mostly a family player, because I love the genetics and seeing how the kids turn out, which includes randomizing traits and aspirations as they age so I never know what to expect. That said, I don't make any kind of line between "non-occult" and "occult." I try to explore everything that the game has to offer, and there are some packs that I don't get to until one of my Sims grows up and rolls the right aspiration. (For example, a teen Sim I have now rolled the Strangerville aspiration so I am finally playing through that with her and plan to have her move there after college.) Another Sim is a jungle explorer and doesn't have children, and she lives with two university buddies with the same aspiration and they are all self-employed and plunder the jungles for income. So, I have a family of vampires (they have since split off into "good" vampires who follow their father Caleb's philosophy and "not so good" vampires who follow their Aunt Lilith's philosophy). I have several families of mermaids, and one of those were actually a merman/alien couple who produced two functional hybrid children who have both an alien form and a merfolk form. I also have a family of spellcasters. My Sims fall in love with whomever they fall in love with, I do as little as possible to control it. When it comes to that, I don't discern between occult or not occult, so more occults get brought into my game when families merge and couples get together. Also, since I roll random aspirations, if a played Sim rolls an aspiration to become an occult I will typically honor that unless I decide to stop playing them.
