If you select a new aspiration (from a different category) when they turn YA, then you get the new bonus trait that comes with it. You can change back to and finish their other aspiration at any point (unless it was a teen only one).
It's a nice way to get an additional bonus trait.
Update: It appears that you don't even need to age to YA
I have a teen mersim that started with the Beach Life aspiration (Home Turf Bonus Trait), but as I plan to make her into a yoga/meditation instructor I switch to Inner Peace (Spa Membership Bonus Trait) whenever I'm training Wellness.
She currently has both bonus traits and she's still a teen.
