At what point do you break up a couple?

I rarely break up married couples (I broke up the Landgraabs once but didn't feel bad about it all until Geoffrey died. Then I sent Malcolm to live with Johnny) but I break up unmarried ones all the time. Sometimes I feel like they aren't going anywhere (for lack of a better phrase) or I feel like I could have a better storytelling opportunity elsewhere.
