At what point do you break up a couple?

When one of the sims in a couple starts to annoy me :p The glitchiness of the game is usually the cause for that, but I go with the flow and in my story that means the sims are drifting away.
Divorces I usually don't do because they're too much of a hassle, especially when there are kids in the picture.
