Every sim I make must have a negative trait. Then I always try to give them something that holds them back, maybe they're poor and will never go above a certain amount of money. Sometimes they're too focused on their career to find love and end up adopting a child at an older age. Or I'll make a really pretty sim but she'll never have any friend because she's a snob and she's mean to people. My couples are often opposites and it's ok to make them divorce once in a while.
I use the manage household window a lot to rearrange families, like putting a rebelious teen into his grandma's household for a week or two just to add some drama. Or maybe the teen decided to run from home and go live with his uni friends in a dank abandoned warehouse. I can play as him or as his worried parents, making up stories as I go, cheating moodlets if need be. Even my happy wholesome households always have something that can go wrong, like keeping a perfectly fine couple child free because they cannot have a child no matter how hard they try and they cannot get accepted for adoption.
