I'm kinda sad that those of us who completed it ages ago still have to see the event notification in our game.

  Well, good for those who really want to do the event and hopefully get the rewards... but yes. They really could try to do better about how the events are implemented. If you don't want to do it, you can choose not to. If you do it and you complete it, it will no longer notify you or linger about in certain ways.
