Zoo opinions
At any rate, I doubt we'll be getting a zoo pack anyway; that would require a ton of new models and animations, and even a decent habitat system would be very costly for the game with a shoestring budget and an aversion to making anything more complex than a toaster. But I'd love to see exotic animals put into the game on a smaller scale.

I don't think you understand what conservation is. It's all about protecting animals, from other people, from other animals, from nature, or from the environment. Animals aren't endangered solely because of humans, there are multiple reasons and factors. Without zoos, many animals would be on the verge of extinction, or already extinct.
The idea that we need to be far away from them is pointless; we share a planet, we can't be far away from them. And I'd rather not wipe out my species for the sake of another species. The best solution would be for humans to take care of animals and protect them from the damages that some people would do to them... which is what a zoo does.
There's nothing wrong with research, as long as you're not abusing the animal. Research can educate people about animals, teach us how to better care for an animal and address their needs, and gives us more insight into biology and stuff.
Zoos are normal. Obviously animals shouldn't be trapped in boxes, and not all animals should be in confined spaces. But zoos aren't supposed to to that; they build habitats specifically catered to an animal's needs. The game could educate fans about this. In fact, zoo games already address this by having the animals suffer if you don't put them in healthy, spacious habitats suited to their needs.
So on the off chance that you have a kid who loves animals buys a zoo game, then inexplicably never does any research into a subject they care about, goes to school or talk to other people about their interest, grows up, they'd still be at least vaguely aware of how things actually work because the game went out of its way to explain what's best for the animal's well-being.
For most zoos, it's a quid-pro-quo; opening up to the public spreads awareness about animals, raises interest in species they might not otherwise care about. They provide readily-accessible information that otherwise would be hard to find, which helps stomp out harmful misinformation. For many zoos, money from visitors helps pay for the upkeep and resources they use to help animals. At any rate, good zoos actively work out ways to compromise peoples' desires to see animals, with the animals' own need for privacy and space.
As for the idea of pet and wet markets, yeah they're pretty sketchy IRL. But that's not what a zoo is. A good zoo is pretty much the opposite of a wet market, in both form and function. And a zoo EP wouldn't be controversial because the vast majority of people love zoos and animals, and understand that this is a game that doesn't hurt any real creatures. There's a reason why Zoo Tycoon in the old days, and Planet Zoo right now, were/are so beloved.

That you feel entitled to conserve and investigate animals in real life speaks of how badly we behave as a species, animals would be better off with us far away, ceasing to monopolize their territories and contaminate them, they do not need humans to investigate them and if it is to save them They can only be saved from other humans ...

Nobody buys a rhino but children will grow up with the idea that seeing an animal in a completely confined space is normal, when in reality animals were born to make the world theirs.
