Bug fixes vs new content?

Clearly, this is gonna be unrealistic, but lets pretend that there was a choice. Lets say that the Sims team said they can continue on with making new content like they are doing now, or they can take a year off of creating new content and focus heavily on bug fixing. Which would you choose?

  • The developers class bug fixes as new content, they said so when discussing the legacy edition that's supposed to be coming up at the end of the year.

I've always found it scummy when they release new content before fixing existing content, I wouldn't dream of allowing that if I was in charge, but then again quality isn't the top concern anymore. Moving forward without addressing existing problems makes things much, much harder to manage further down the road. The same studio left the third game in an appalling state and they will do the same to four if people don't make a fuss.

Yes, new updates will always mean new issues, but the sheer amount of issues that come through with some of them is ridiculous.

When my excitement for a new pack is diminished by the dread of adding glitches/bugs to the game, EA has a problem because I will not be buying that new pack, or installing the update. When so many players look to the modders to fix bugs EA's team can't or won't, we the players are given just one choice: We can either be happy with the game as it is or roll the dice and purchase new content after installing the pre-pack update with the hope our games don't implode. StrangerVille is the only pack I bought this year that didn't have a negative impact on my game. I had zero issues with it.

For the last three years I have been waiting for Dine Out to be fixed. Others have been waiting for the Vampire pack to be fixed. While even more players want the toddler bugs to be fixed. All of these bugs are not small annoyances when they keep us from enjoying the game. And with each new bug that crops up, the idea of buying yet another pack becomes less attractive. I don't want to add more mods to my game. Especially when the gurus have hinted Sims4 has a a couple of years left in it's lifespan. What will my game look like in another year if this continues? That's my biggest issue.

If the modders are able to fix a problem by creating a small tuning mod, why isn't the team responsible for taking care of these same problems able to do the same thing? That is what confuses me. Does EA even have a team dedicated to fixing Sims4? Or do they simply attempt to fix what the modders haven"t and move on? Part of the problem here is the fact the base game has undergone some major updating and no one seems to know how those updates will impact the game going forward. Which might be why we are seeing a lot of nice stuff to make the game pretty but not much as far as new gameplay features. Or any updating to the basics such as whims, traits, romance, or features from past packs. In the June update for Island Living we saw updates made to fishing, fitness and jobs. Okay. It was time for some newness to be added to those. But those were updates made to the base game.

What I find odd about this process of updating the base game before releasing every new pack, is how little we get in the pack itself. It seems as if more effort is put into updating the base game rather than what is actually included in these new packs. It's almost as if the pack is an afterthought. Updating the base game takes precedence over new gameplay, and those updates are at the root of the increase in the amount of bugs we are seeing. Any new gameplay we see in new packs is often broken. Or needs workarounds in order to play. Or mods.

The idea we have to choose between new gameplay features or bug fixes is ludicrous. But it is a choice we have to make before we update or buy new packs. I find that disturbing.

DO was fixed as was the Vampires - at least for pc - check the patch notes and check the games. I know the console folks though are still waiting for weaknesses to be fixed for vamps but they are fixed in pcs. I haven't had any toddler bugs so I have no idea what that problem is for the ones having it - and did not check patch notes for toddler bugs either - although I know they fixed the high chair problems some people had a while back - have no idea other wise.

The big toddler bug came from the IL patch - if a toddler read a book or picked up a toy, she couldn't put it down, and then couldn't do anything else, such as sleeping or eating. That bug was fixed in the July patch with the stealing food dine out bug. People have complained about day care and toddlers not finishing their meals, but neither one has been a problem for me - my tots return from day care well-fed but bored. They even learn some skills at day care. My toddlers are finishing their food. Even the high chair seems to be working fairly well (my Sims aren't constantly taking the kid out of the high chair before she can be fed).
  • I would say fixing bugs is more important, but not if it will take a year. I don't want to wait a year for new stuff.
  • Can't really vote on it but IMO bug fixes are a must but there is a lot of other things that need to be overhauled not just the bug fixes but they also need to fix things they left out of the packs.
  • I'll admit I'd probably feel differently if I had all the packs, but as this is a hypothetical, and not at all likely to take place, I can say that I'd be fine if they wanted to take a year off to focus on bugs and cross-pack compatibility.

Never going to happen, but I'd be fine if it did.
  • Pretty sure there are 2 separate teams working on these so there's no need to take time off to fix bugs. What they more likely need is more staff working on the bug fixes.
  • Well, this one is easy for me because with pets, seasons and magic, I now have everything in the game that I wanted from the start, so if they decided to take a break and fix already existing content now before releasing new stuff, I would be totally fine with it. If it's going to be an entire year, however, I'd expect not only bug fixes in the literal sense, but also patching features into old packs that should have been there from the beginning, like magic for kids.
  • NEW Content. Devs do not fix the game the HQ team fixes the game - devs need to do what they do - make new content - period.
  • So as long as the Devs keep pumping out that content it is okay for many bugs to come along as in which the HQ team is slow on the uptake in fixing them and there are many bugs as well. So the HQ tteam need to fix the game - period.
