Builders, help! Can't seem to delete exterior trim

Okay, so I decided to try to fix up my own house for once, and let me tell you: my first experience building in TS4 hasn't been all that great. I've been stuck trying to change the color of this blasted trim. I tried everything: deleting that room, deleting the fences, the colums, but that thing just won't go away. Even if I decide to do away with the whole thing, the trim remains. I REALLY, desperately want to either get rid of the darned thing or, preferably, change its color.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this thing? :#

  • I think faffing around with the mouse works - ie the trim does not always highlight based on where you want to place the mouse in 3D space. I seem to remember having to move the mouse pointer around to get a connection. I seem to remember looking more down from above and moving the mouse into a position, rather than from a side-on view.
  • I'm having this problem too. :( I've done everything I can think of, taking out my mods (which are all cas based so I don't know why they would cause build glitches, but I tried it anyways) I've deleted the balcony and rebuilt it, I've deleted the fences, I've deleted all the other exterior trims surrounding it, I've restarted my computer, I've fixed the game. I just really don't know what to do! No matter what I try, it won't highlight, and it won't delete. Is this a glitch that needs to be patched? idk, but it's kinda frustrating.
  • Yeah I haven’t really figured out building in this game too well either, when I try to alter other people’s buildings for myself I have problems with trims, friezes (sp?) and things like that. Editing fancy built ones really become a problem for me sometimes.
  • Sometimes I have that issue and it’s usually something else attached to it that won’t let it delete. I would put my cursor over what I’m trying to delete and it will highlight the item that is preventing it from deleting. Like the other day I had a column I was trying to delete that wouldn’t delete, and it was a wall or something that was preventing it from going away.

Thanks so much for the help guys! I ended up deciding to just ignore it for the time being, and when I went back to that side of the house the trim was suddenly brown! So I decided not to touch anything anymore hahaha. I think it was a glitch - I am now experiencing the same with fences that have suddenly disappeared and won't appear even if you try to place new ones on the same spot... am hoping that's a glitch too and the fence will reappear eventually.

This is what I managed to make of it. Still very much a work in progress, though. Haven't even started on the inside/upstairs, and am not liking the placement of those windows just yet. But if only those fences hadn't decided to disappear on me, I would've been pretty happy with the result already. :joy:

It looks fabulous, though. Since it is frustrating you, I would advise not to change anything for a time. Just continue playing your game, and when the mood strikes, go into build/buy mode and try to change the offending things. I often realize there's a 'mistake' in my build after I have Sims on the lot. I think I edited 'fixed' things three times during my game play just yesterday, in fact. Found a piece of foundation that was missing, twice, and a railing that wasn't there. Then, as it turns out the archway into the kitchen was curiously 'missing'. :o All fixed, now, until I stumble across something else. I guess I would have to say my builds are always a work in progress. LOL Don't let it defeat you.
  • This is your first build. :o Amazing job.
It took me forever to even realize there were roofs, lol.

    Hrm.

I would say to go to the lower fence, use the one tool to make a wall. Take off the fence and wall it off. Then see if you can delete out the offending trim. half-wall and railings are just cut-away for the wall section, perhaps it is "stuck" on the non-existant wall from the lower floor.

Most excellent answer, Gruffman - I sincerely appreciate it. I had the same issue and your suggestion worked perfectly. I'd give you a hug if it weren't for COVID!

the house looks great! fences disappear like that when you hover a gate over the fence with bb.moveobjects on.. on. turn it off and place gates over the invisible fence spots and then delete them.

Gosh, thank you so much for the help! This is kind of my first time building a house, and I have to admit that I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.

Wow, makes my first time building a house look sad. I went the easy route and made a basic cubic design, but I'm quite proud of my little box house. :)

    Me too. Boxes are nice.
