To bunk down simply means to sleep usually while travelling. Trains, ships, bunk houses, inns, camps, trail houses, offer beds or sleep spots - to bunk down in as temporary places to sleep - farm laborers and ranch hands stay in bunk houses - or sleep houses. It's just an old way to call places to sleep temporarily. Not much to do with bunk beds though which are not usually considered as temporary places to sleep. LOL
