For changing traits, I would use the Re-traiting potion from the Rewards store. Cheating traits will often leave behind some traces. Lets say you remove an Active trait from a sim, they will still get the tense moodlets from "not enough exercise". The traits leave a residue, if you will, if they are "cheated". I've had more success with the potion.
ETA: forgot to mention the potion cost 5000 reward points, so I'd use MCCC cheat to give my sim those points first :)
